Moving Tips
4 Weeks before Moving:
- Tour your house including your attic, garage, storage shed and decide which items should be discarded or donated to charity. Consider or plan a garage sale.
- Contact your moving agent and request an accurate estimate of all your moving charges.
- Begin using up frozen food and staples. Buy only what will be used up before the move.
- Make your travel and accommodation arrangements. Arrange transfer of records.
- Contact utility and related companies and arrange the date for the disconnect/connect of services at your old home and new home.
3 Weeks before Moving:
- Arrange for transportation of any pets.
- Return library books, videos and any other borrowed items. Collect anything lent or out for repairs.
- Dispose of flammables, paint, pressure cans, cleaning fluids, ect.
- Send out change of address notices and advise post office.
- Arrange transport of hazardous goods. Example: gas cans, barbeque gas tank, lawn mower containing gas.
2 Weeks before Moving
- Draw up floor plan of your new home and indicate furniture placement.
- Start packing if you are planning to do it yourself.
- Collect important papers.
- If you are moving in or out of a building requiring the use of an elevator , book the day with the superintendent.
- Make arrangements for your children on moving day.
1 Week before Moving
- Prepare car for trip. Finish packing all suitcases and basic essentials.
- Plan to carry with you valuables, medications, documents, currency and jewelry.
- Withdraw contents from your safe deposit box.
- Defrost and wipe dry freezer and refrigerator.
Moving Day
- Remain in home until movers have left.
- Check bill of lading
- Tour house with movers to check for overlooked items.
- Confirm new address and delivery date.
- Provide contact number to movers
- Check home to make sure windows and doors are locked, Utilities are disconnected, home is cleaned, keys transferred and lights off.
